What to Wear & Bring
Gear | Clothing | Footwear Required
Wear your “Play” Clothes:
You should wear clothes that will not rip or tear easily, allow flexibility and make sure you’re not too “attached” to them (they will get dirty). In early Spring and Fall, light fleece, light hiking pants, maybe shorts. NO stretchy type leggings or tights. They tear too easily. In Summer, short sleeve light colored T shirts, (no tank tops) medium to long length shorts, and a loose fitting hat. (Short length shorts are not good in the canyons! We cannot stress this enough! Short Shorts do not have enough coverage for the harness or for protection.) Light colors are much cooler and if you prefer, a long sleeve will protect the skin from abrasion. If you have a rain jacket/shell please bring it - just in case.
Good Footwear:
Soft soled, comfortable, “medium” hiking shoes work best. Shoes must enclose the foot all the way around and tie. (NO water shoes or sandals of any kind.) (This includes, Keens, Chacos, Tevas, Solomon Amphibian shoes, Five Finger toed shoes, etc.) Shoes must have good tread and descent ankle support. NO flimsy shoes. (This includes, Keds, Vans, All Stars, Pumas, skater shoes, minimalist shoes, minimalist sneakers, etc.) A good sturdy/burly sneaker or trail shoe with good tread is okay. ABSOLUTELY NO: old, worn, torn or delaminating footwear permitted.
Some guests prefer high tops, some prefer low. Low does provide more foot angulations, but ankle support is lessened. Big leather boots get really heavy when wet and muddy. Light white socks are best. Leave the heavy wool hiking socks at home. Socks should cover the ankle to protect from abrasions. Whatever you put on your feet, they may become dirty.
Travel Light:
Unnecessary gear is a hindrance to our guests, let the guides do the work. Snacks, medications, lip balm and a “little” extra clothing in your pack is fine. Much beyond that you should ask. Your guide(s) have extensive 1st aid kits, ropes, webbing, and all the equipment necessary to keep the group safe and comfortable. Consolidate gear when possible.
Hiking “Gear”:
We supply all necessary gear! Our canyoneering packs are designed to withstand the merciless sandstone canyon walls and rigid water bottles are provided to protect this precious resource. Helmets, harnesses and gloves are included too. If there are water crossings, waterproof bags are provided.
Sunglasses and Sunscreen:
Apply a good coat of sunscreen before departing the shop. We are over a mile high in elevation and the sun is strong here. Sunglasses that have good UV protection are worth the money too. They may get some scuffs out there, so consider bringing a good but not an expensive pair. Who wants all those wrinkles anyway? Sunglass “chums”/lanyards are excellent.
Camera:
Make sure you bring a protective case for your camera. There is sand and water in the canyons.
Jewelry/Wallets etc.:
Remove watches, ALL jewelry, Fitbits etc. Do Not bring wallets, money or ID with you in the canyons.
If you need it in the future to continue on in life or on this trip, do not bring it in the canyons.
